Ta živé boje a spory posledního desítiletí mají smysl jen jako symptom té krise, kterou prožíváme. Ty boje a spory mají jen smysl jako pokus o přirozenou organisaci a dělbu národní práce; nové má se starému přičlenit, má staré oživit a obrodit. Naši intelektuálové byli nedávno povzbuzeni z míst nejvyšších k „široké intelektuální diskusi“; to je dobře demokratické (jak ostatně už říkával třeba Masaryk). ,Diskuse‘ však může být chápána různě; původní význam jako by nás varoval: diskutující je také (a původně především) ten, kdo se (např. v promluvě či spíše v povídání) rozbíhá více směry, rozptyluje se, pobíhá sem tam a těká. Teprve mnohem později se dostává slovesu discurrere nového významu, totiž probírat nějaké téma (nikoli tedy pouze význam ,slova‘) z různých stran a úhlů; příbuzné slovo „diskurs“ (spjaté s discursare) je toho dokladem. To však už poukazuje spíše k ,disputaci‘, tj. ke zkoumání, bádání, bedlivému šetření (vyšetřování), tedy k poněkud náročnější intelektuální práci (už třeba Cicero staví proti sobě pouhou promluvu, oratio, a dobře připravené disputatio).
