Da jede Wissenschaft denkende Befassung mit Gegenständen ist, die entweder selbst als seiend gelten oder doch – wo es sich um „ideale“ Gegenstände handelt – wenigstens indirekt im Zusammenhang mit der Erfassung des Seienden stehen, bedeutet Wissenschaft von den Prinzipien auf theoretischem Gebiete zweierlei:1. Wissenschaft von den Prinzipien des Denkens, sofern es meinend oder erkennend auf Gegenstände gerichtet ist.2. Wissenschaft von den Prinzipien und Kategorien der Gegenstände selbst. Zu letzterer gehört vor allem und im eigentlichsten Sinne die Ontologie als Wissenschaft vom Seienden.Es gibt jedoch Richtungen philosophischen Denkens, die die Aufgabe der Philosophie auf die Erforschung der Prinzipien des Erkennens reduzieren, weil alles Gegenständliche voll und ganz in seiner „Konstitution“ durch das Erkennen beschlossen sei und keine darüber hinausragende Bedeutung besitze; Ontologie wäre demgemäß als Sonderdisziplin überflüssig.Es gibt weiterhin andere Richtungen, die – außerhalb der Einreihung der Philosophie unter die Wissenschaften stehend – die Beziehung des Denkens auf seiende Gegenstände der Philosophie zuweisen, diese vielmehr auf ein übergegenständliches Gebiet des „reinen Seins“ hinlenken möchten, das jenseits von Subjekt und Objekt liege. Hier wird Ontologie also nicht als Lehre von seienden Gegenständen, sondern als unmittelbares Erfassen eines von den Gegenständen abgehobenen Seins verstanden.Demgegenüber will die wissenschaftliche Ontologie nicht als Lehre vom Sein, sondern als Lehre von den Grundbeschaffenheiten und Grundkategorien seiender Gegenstände aufgefaßt werden; sie läßt diese Gegenstände auch nicht in der Konstitution durch das erkennende Denken aufgehen.(Ontologie als Wissenschaft vom Seienden, in: Zschr.f.philos.Forsch. ,S. 556-7.)
