Pod sugestivním dojmem (byť chimérickým), že celý svět je jedním velikým komplexem kauzálních vztahů, byly tzv. nahodilosti vykládány jako subjektivní neznalosti. Proti tomuto starému předsudečnému pojetí (známému zejména v slavné formulaci, že geniální duch, který by znal stav světa do všech detailů v kterémkoli okamžiku a také zákonitosti všech dějů, by byl schopen vypočítat stav v kterémkoli okamžiku jiném, ať už minulém nebo budoucím) musím dnes snad každý zastánce kauzality připustit, že kauzální nexus má trhliny, mezery, takže velké množství konkrétních „stavů“ světa (ať už v užším nebo širším, eventuelně nejširším rozsahu, v tom už naprosto nutně) by mohlo být také „jiných“, tj. že by mohly mít jinou podobu a že řada procesů by se mohla odvíjet také jinak. Povaha akceptace takové eventuelní „jinakosti“ může mít také různou povahu a různý rozsah a dosah. (V žánru sci-fi už vešel před delší dobou ve známost fenomén tzv. efektu mávnutí motýlích křídel.) Musíme si totiž uvědomit, že možnost ovlivnit třeba přírodní procesy promyšleným zásahem člověka (ale na nižší úrovni i zásahem jiných živých bytostí, byť nepromyšleným), se mohla otevřít jen díky tomu, že přirozený samospád určitého tzv. kauzálního řetězce může být někdy velmi křehký. A to je možné jen tenkrát, když připustíme, že není jednolitý a neprostupný, nýbrž že je jaksi „pórovitý“ a – tudíž – otevřený „nahodilostem“. Tak se zdá, že kauzální vztahy mohou být v jistém omezeném rozsahu zachovány. – Zde však přichází ke slovu kritická analýza tohoto pojetí samého. Vše se zdá nasvědčovat, že tzv. nahodilosti nejsou pouze jakousi druhotnou vadou, jakousi degradací kauzality, nýbrž že jsou čímsi fundamentálním, co je teprve druhotně „zpracováváno“ do podoby setrvačností. A teprve v tomto druhotném zpracování se objevují tu a tam jisté nedostatky a mezery, jichž potom ona původní „aktivita“, spjatá s „nahodilostí“ (resp. s nahodilostmi) může využít a zapřáhnout je do stavby struktur vyšší úrovně. Jinak řečeno: základem jsou „nahodilosti“ („novinky“, které nejsou následkem příčin, ale jsou to skutečné „počátky“ případných nových „kauzálních“ řetězců), a teprve zpracováním těchto nahodilostí a vtištěním řádu do čehosi, co původně ze žádného předchozího „řádu“ nevyplývá, začíná stavba světa, který se nám jeví jako „zákonitý“.
