[Let such a man fight against them with all his might: if he once gives way, he will be vanquished; but if he strives against his sufferings, he will conquer. As it is, however, what most men do is to drag down upon their own heads a falling ruin which they ought to try to support. Každá tematizace předpokládá nejen to, co je tematizováno (a tím může být zásadně cokoli, tedy i to, co se z některých hledisek nejeví jako ,skutečné‘), ale také – a to nás musí zajímat především – prostředky takové tematizace a zejména toho, kdo onu tematizaci podniká jako svůj výkon. Tento výkon je právě jakožto výkon tematizujícího subjektu nepřevoditelný na to, co je tematizováno, a není z tematizovaného prostě odvoditelný, i když nepochybně něco z toho, co je tematizováno, musí být aktem tematizace nějak zaměřeno, alespoň předběžně zacíleno (intendováno).
Běžně (a tradičně) se o tom, co je tematizováno, mluví jako o „předmětu“ tematizace; my se tomuto zvyku budeme vyhýbat, protože máme za to, že zásadně může být tematizován také nějaký „ne-předmět“ či „non-předmět“ (rozdíl mezi obojím bude přiblížen hned v následujícím). Jestliže tuto možnost akceptujeme, otvírá se před námi otázka principiálního významu: co se stane, když je nějaký takový ne-předmět tematizován takovým způsobem, že je intencionálně zaměřen, jako by šlo o předmět.
