[Let such a man fight against them with all his might: if he once gives way, he will be vanquished; but if he strives against his sufferings, he will conquer. As it is, however, what most men do is to drag down upon their own heads a falling ruin which they ought to try to support. If you begin to withdraw your support from that which thrusts toward you and totters and is ready to plunge, it will follow you and lean more heavily upon you; but if you hold your ground and make up your mind to push against it, it will be forced back. …]

Mám své pochybnosti o skutečných hodnotách tohoto horolezectví, kdy se člověk snaží dostat na vrchol všeho a všechno přehlížet. Nejslavnější z alpských vůdců byl ďábel, když vzal Ježíše na vysokou horu a ukázal mu všechna království světa. Ale ďáblova radost, když stanul tak vysoko, nebyla radost z velikosti, nýbrž z toho, že viděl malost, protože všichni lidé tam dole vypadali jako hmyz. Teprve z údolí vypadají věci jako velké; z roviny se zdají vysoké; a já jsem dítě z roviny a nestojím o toho slavného alpského vůdce. Pozdvihuji svých očí k horám, odkudž by mi přišla pomoc; ale nebudu tam zvedat svou kostru, pokud to nebude nezbytně zapotřebí. Všecko záleží na psychologickém přístupu; a v této chvíli je může přístup docela pohodlný: zůstanu klidně na svém místě a zázraky a dobrodružství si na mne budou sedat jako mouchy. A je jich hodně, za to vám ručím. Svět nikdy nezajde na nedostatek divů; pouze na nedostatek údivu.
