As it is, however, what most men do is to drag down upon their own heads a falling ruin which they ought to try to support. Hat dieses verzerrte Leben noch Wirklichkeit? hat diese hypertrophische Wirklichkeit noch Leben? die pathetische Geste einer gigantischen Todesbereitschaft endet in einem Achselzucken – sie wissen nicht, warum sie sterben; wirklichkeitslos fallen sie ins Leere, dennoch umgeben und getötet von einer Wirklichkeit, die die ihre ist, da sie deren Kausalität begreifen.2
Damit ist der Problemkreis zur Erkenntnis dieser Zeit umrissen. Denn die logische Aufgabe aller historischen Erkenntnis ist im Problem der geschichtlichen Lebenswirklichkeit, welche die Zeit erfüllt und sie zur Epoche konkretisiert, gegeben, ist gegeben in der Frage: wie begreift der (hypothetische) historisch-lebendige Mensch jene Wirklichkeit, die in ihrer (empirischen) quellenmäßigen Dokumentiertheit für ihn zeugen soll? – begreift er sie, ist es nachzuweisen, daß er sie begreifen muß, weil ihre Kausalität der seinen entspricht und ihm dadurch plausibel wird, dann ist jene Wirklichkeit als die seine anzusehen, dann darf sie mit Fug für ihn zeugen.
Die Frage „Wie begreift der historische Mensch seine Wirklichkeit?“ sucht die historische Erkenntnis in eine bestimmte Richtung einzustellen. Aufgabe der Untersuchung wird es sein, die Berechtigung dieser Einstellung zu erweisen. Vorwegnehmend sei bemerkt, daß sie mit der scheinbar nämlichen, welcher der Diltheyschen3 Historik zu Grunde liegt, nicht identifiziert werden darf.

Therefore, while you are beginning to call your mind your own, meantime apply this maxim of the wise: consider that it is more important who receives a thing, than what it is he receives.
