Obeznámit se s něčím ještě zdaleka neznamená to „poznat“ v plném slova smyslu. Obeznámení znamená vždycky nejen „praktické“ zapojení do širší zkušenosti, ale intencionálně také jisté porozumění, jak je něco zapojeno do širšího kontextu (a míníme zejména skutečného, i když někdy může jít i kontexty pouze míněné). Náleží k tomu také jisté navyklost na to, jak to zapojení do širšího kontextu „funguje“, ale chybí tomu porozumění, proč tomu tak je (a vůbec pojmové rozlišení toho, co k sobě náleží a co ne, a také jakým způsobem, zda nutně nebo nahodile, eventuelně s větší nebo menší pravděpodobností, což je třeba od „nutnost“ odlišit). Klasický je způsob, jak to vyjádřil Augustin ve svých Vyznáních, když uvažoval o čase: dobře „ví“, co to je čas, je s tím obeznámen, vždyť o tom uvažuje ! Ale když má říci, co čas je, když je dotazován na to, jak čas přesně vymezit, najednou jako by nevěděl, co na to říci. Lidé jsou obeznámeni se svým okolím, prostředím, jsou obeznámeni i s nástroji, potřebnými k různým druhům práce, „znají“ jiné lidi, tj. jsou obeznámeni s tím, jak jiní lidé žijí a jak se chovají – ale velmi často teprve nějaká konkrétní a nějak naléhavá situaci jim ukáže, že to všechno vlastně pořádně neznají, že s tím jsou jen obeznámeni, že si na to nějak zvykli, aniž by se o tom snažili více a detailněji přemýšlet.
