Lidé z aerolinií byli svým způsobem života kupodivu dost /175/ znuděni a v noci často chodili popíjet do barů. Byli mi všichni sympatičtí, a tak abych se choval společensky, chodil jsem s nimi několikrát týdně do baru na pár skleniček.
Jednou, kolem půl čtvrté odpoledne, jsem šel po chodníku naproti pláži Copacabana kolem baru. A najednou mě zaplavil strašlivě silný pocit: Tohle je přesně, co chci; to by mi teď akorát sedlo. Zrovna teď bych se hrozně rád napil.
Zamířil jsem k baru, a najednou mi napadlo: Moment! Teď, uprostřed odpoledne? Nikdo kolem, žádný společenský důvod k pití. Jak je to možné, že máš tak intenzivní pocit, že si musíš dát skleničku? – a vyděsil jsem se.
Od té doby jsem už nikdy nepil. Nemyslím, že bych byl v nějakém skutečném nebezpečí, protože bylo velice snadné přestat. Ale ta silná touha, které jsem nerozuměl, mě vyděsila.Víte, myšlení je pro mě zdrojem takové zábavy, že nechci poškodit ten nejhezčí stroj, který dělá život tak vzrušující. Z toho samého důvodu jsem se později nemohl odhodlat vyzkoušet LSD, navzdory svému zájmu o halucinace.
