… Po letech přemýšlení o proměnách evropského křesťanství ve světle sociologie, teologie i historie musím dát za pravdu oběma těmto názorům zároveň. Má teze zní, že Druhý vatikánský koncil konec „katolicismu“ skutečně přinesl, nebo spíše zahájil – a učinil důležitý krok ke „katolicitě“; toto vykročení ovšem zůstává – a jak si ukážeme, zřejmě musí trvale zůstat – nedovršené.
Ano, souhlasím, že koncil přispěl ke konci „katolicismu“ – ale nikoliv v onom smyslu, jak bývá kritiky koncilu tato věta míněna. Neznamenal „konec církve“ ani ztrátu její identity – spíše umožnil církvi vyjít z jedné etapy jejích dějin. Koncilní obrat znamená poznání a uznání, že jeden dějinně podmíněný kulturně-sociální tvar církve vyčerpal své možnosti, že jeden trend a styl prožívání a vyjadřování víry se ocitl ve slepé uličce. Pokračovat v něm by znamenalo ohrozit katolicitu církve, vystavit se riziku, že se církev začne podobat sektě.
„Katolicismem“ zde míním jednu podobu církve, která se vyvinula v reakci na evropský novověk, na reformaci a modernizační proces. Byl to plod defenzivní mentality, který zřejmě započal protireformací a vyvrcholil na 1. vatikánském koncilu. Byla to tendence k budování striktně ohraničeného doktrinálně-institucionálního systému. Organismus církve, mystického Těla Kristova, se stále více začal identifikovat s pevně vymezenou organizací, institucí a její systematicky propracovanou doktrínou. Takto chápané křesťanství se ovšem stále více stává „-ismem“ mezi ostatními „-ismy“ novověku.
