Filosofie Dostojevského má svůj zvláštní význačný ráz v realismu etickém. Všecky jeho spisy neseny jsou k nejvyšším cílům, ale nikde nekáže. Dostojevský není žrec; je o víře své naprosto přesvědčen, ale nestává se fanatikem ani tehdy, kdy přímo se utkává s odpůrci. Je ke všem tolerantní, vždy milý, a přece neúprosně důsledný. Spravedlnost přijímáš u Dostojevského bez reptání.
Snad je v tom kus slovanství: i nejvyšší autoritu nedovedeme dobře pojímati jakožto vnější, musí nám býti vniterně posvěcena. Dostojevský proto nemá smyslu pro nějaký kategorický imperativ, a přece opravdovost a svatost mravních zásad nikým se tak živě nepociťuje, jako Dostojevským. Už Tolstoj šel mezi kazatele, – Dostojevský vyloží ti dobré i špatné jednání a posoudí, že odsoudíš pak sám citem i rozumem.
