Als Philosoph lag es mir nahe, die Wachstumsbegriffe miteinander zu vergleichen, die jeweils vorausgesetzt wurden. Es wa auffällig, wie wenig man sich einer die Gemüter so erregenden Auseinandersetzung um die Semantik des Wortes „Wachstum“ bemühte. Nirgendwo wurde auch nur erwähnt, daß der griechische Name für Natur – „physis“ – „Wachstum“ bedeutet. Da der „Wuchs“ einer Pflanze, eines Menschen, einer Gesellschaft, einer politischen Ordnung zugleich das Wesen dieser Sache bezeichnet, wurde weder bemerkt noch gedacht. „Wuchs“ ist Entwicklung in der Zeit. Aber jeder Wuchs hat seine immanenten Maße, die zugleich die „Grenzen des Wachstums“ vorzeichnen. Ohne solche Grenzen, das heißt ohne immanente Maße, ist Wachstum überhaupt nicht möglich. Expansionsprozesse, die nicht durch immanente Maße kontrolliert werden, sind Explosionen. Hier läßt sich nicht mehr angeben, was „wächst“. Aber die Methoden, nach denen man heute Wachstumsprozesse mißt, wurden aus der Physik der anorganischen Natur übernommen. Für den gesunden Menschenverstand ist kaum zu begreifen, wie schwer es dem funktionalen Determinismus der heute herrschenden Wissenschaften fällt, zu verstehen, daß Bäume nicht in den Himmel wachsen können.

Pokud nemáme na mysli „růst“ ve smyslu pouze kvantitativního přibývání (např. hromady cihel přidáváním dalších), kde ovšem ono skutečné přibývání je závislé na našem pohledu (a vnímavosti atd.), pak předpokladem skutečného růstu je schopnost srůstání nejen různých prvků či složek v jednotu, nýbrž také „srůstání“ předchozích fází s těmi následnými, neboť každé skutečné jsoucno „jest“ rozprostřeno (rozepnuto, roztaženo) v čase, tj. nikdy není omezeno na momentální „nyní“. A také se ze žádných momentálních „nyní“ „neskládá“, ani není jejich pouhou sérií. Musíme si zvyknout na to, že v každém okamžiku svého bytí se děje jsoucno celé (tedy událost celá). Růst tedy původně a hlavně znamená tuto srostitost všech „jsoucností“, které se vždycky nějak (a vždycky trochu jinak) dějí v každém okamžiku kterékoli z nich, která je právě aktuální. To znamená, jinak řečeno, že všechny „jsoucnosti“ jsou v každém okamžiku nějak „při tom“, tedy „přítomny“, i když jejich přítomnost není „aktuální“ ve dvojím smyslu: nemohou být v té chvíli ani zdrojem, ani cílem žádného činu, žádného aktu. To je výsadou každé jsoucnosti pouze v tom okamžiku, kdy je sama aktuální. Pouze tehdy na sebe bere předmětnou podobu (předmětnou stránku, vnějšek). Růst se však netýká jen vnějšku; vnějšek je pouze jednou, a to méně základní stránkou. (Písek, 030704-3.)
