... Ces trois objections ne sont pas très sérieuses. D´abord la première objection: vous pouvez choisir n´importe quoi, n´est pas exacte. Le choix est possible dans un sens, mais ce qui n´est pas possible, c´est de ne pas choisir. Je peux toujours choisir, mais je dois savoir que si je ne choisis pas, je choisis encore. Ceci, quoique paraissant strictement formel, a une très grande importace, pour limiter la fantaisie et le caprice. S´il est vrai qu´en face d´une situation, par exemple la situation qui fait que je suis un être sexué pou/74/vant avoir des raport avec un être d´un autre sexe, pouvant avoir des enfants, je sui obligé de choisir une attitude, et que toute façon je porte la responsabilité d´un choix qui, en m´engageant, engage aussi l´humanité entière, même si aucune valeur à priori ne détermine mon choix, celui-ci n´a rien à voir avec le caprice; et si l´on croit retrouver ici la théorie gidienne de l´acte gratuit, c´est qu´on ne voit pas l´énorme différence entre cette doctrine et celle de Gide. Gide ne sait pas ce que c´est qu´une situation; il agit par simple caprice. Pour nous, au contraire, l´homme se trouve dans une situation organisée, où i lest lui-même engagé, il engage par son choix l´humanité entière, e til /75/ ne peut pas éviter de choisir: ou bien ...
