[Let such a man fight against them with all his might: if he once gives way, he will be vanquished; but if he strives against his sufferings, he will conquer. As it is, however, what most men do is to drag down upon their own heads a falling ruin which they ought to try to support. Od jisté doby se stalo slovo „šance“ slovem hodně frekventovaným. Možná to svědčí o něčem významnějším než jen o vlivu angličtiny (resp. američtiny) a sklonu lidí k napodobování. Někdy se v jazyce ukáže, jak potřebným se stalo začít užívat nějakého nového termínu nebo nového slovního obratu – jako by šlo o doklad jakési změny ve vnímání, ve vidění světa a života. V každém případě je dobré věnovat jazykovým novinkám určitou pozornost. Tak, jako dost pochybná jazyková zvyklost říkat o něčem nikoli „co“ to je, ale „o čem“ to je, napovídá, že tu jde o nějakou hlubší potřebu zpochybnit tzv. fakticitu a stále znovu si připomínat spjatost významu a smyslu s kontextem a se zaměřeností ke kontextu, tj. k něčemu dalšímu (v podstatě tedy o vědomí meta-foričnosti všeho), tak časté užívání slova šance zaměřuje naši pozornost nikoli k pouhým podmínkám a předpokladům, ale k něčemu, co tu ještě není a co tu ani nebude, pokud se oné „šance“ nechopíme, pokud „příležitosti“ nevyužijeme k aktivnímu zásahu do oněch vhodných podmínek či předpokladů.
