[Let such a man fight against them with all his might: if he once gives way, he will be vanquished; but if he strives against his sufferings, he will conquer. As it is, however, what most men do is to drag down upon their own heads a falling ruin which they ought to try to support. František Xaver Šalda (1935)

Je to stará, mnohokrát osvědčená zkušenost, že sláva, která ti padne tak skoro darem do klína, nemívá trvání. Dvě tři generace musí potrvat odpor, aby se mohlo mluvit o díle, které jej překonalo, jako o pevnější hodnotě a skutečném kulturně-národním statku a kladu. Budoucnost vyplácívá uznání obyčejně jen těm knihám a těm dílům, kterým zůstali všecko dlužni jejich vrstevníci a jejich potomci; kdo vybral moc à conto za života, po smrti obyčejně odchází s prázdnou.
