Tradičně oživovaný spor mezi historickým relativismem a tvrzením o nadčasové a nadsituační platnosti „hodnot“ (resp. jejich „absolutnosti“) je sporem nesprávným, protože falešně rozvrženým a nadto předpokládajícím z obou stran „objektivitu“ těchto hodnot (jednou zastávanou, podruhé jen nekriticky popíranou). Přidržíme-li se předběžně termínu „hodnota“ (který si ovšem zaslouží pečlivou analýzu významů), musíme trvat na tom, že rozhodně nejsou nějak předem, nadčasově a nadsituačně „dány“, nýbrž že k jejich ustavení dochází za spoluúčasti příslušných subjektů, ale také s ohledem na povahu situace, kterou nelze redukovat na výčet „skutečností“, které se v ní vyskytují a do ni nějak náleží. To však nutně znamená, že samému chápání historické relativity je třeba dát jiný než obvyklý význam, zejména pak mnohem širší: nejde tu o jen relativizaci lidského chápání oněch hodnot, nýbrž o to, že tyto „hodnoty“ nemají povahu hypostazovaného „ideálního bytí o sobě“ (jako to chtěl např. Nicolai Hartmann), nýbrž mají povahu nepředmětnou a adventivní: přicházejí k nám nikoli jako danosti, nýbrž jako apely, výzvy, pro něž musíme mít zvláštní „smysl“, „cit“, „vnímavost“, senzitivitu, tykadla („antény“) se specifickým zaměřením. Je to ovšem vnímavost vůči „nejsoucímu“, ale „přicházejícímu“, a to nikoli přicházejícímu odněkud, kde to už od dřívějška „jest“, nýbrž přicházejícímu se uplatnit, uskutečnit za pomoci nějakého subjektu (a tedy do jeho situace resp. do jeho situovanosti). Ale právě proto, že tyto apely či výzvy přicházejí, aby oslovily určitý subjekt (konkrétní subjekty), mají zřetelně adresnou povahu: míří do určité situace a oslovují určitý subjekt – a to znamená, že se k nim vztahují, tedy jsou „relativní“, neboť ,jsou‘ v „relaci“ k nim. Nejde tedy jen o to, že onen subjekt (a jeho situovanost) je ve vztahu (relaci) k oněm výzvám, nýbrž že také ony výzvy jsou ve vztahu (relaci) k nějakému určitým způsobem ,situovanému‘ (v osvětí orientovanému) subjektu.
