In this text, Ladislav Hejdánek recommends three significant scholarly works for the Book of the Year poll organized by the newspaper Lidové noviny. The selected titles are The Presocratic Philosophers, Stories of the Apostles (New Testament Apocrypha II), and Martin Heidegger's Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics. Hejdánek argues that contemporary society is witnessing a gradual farewell to the ancient traditions that define Europe. To ensure a viable European future, it is crucial to achieve a deeper understanding of these departing roots, specifically the Greek, Jewish, and Christian foundations of European identity. The third work, Heidegger's analysis of Kant, illustrates how to critically engage with the Enlightenment tradition that continues to shape our current perspective. Ultimately, Hejdánek emphasizes that we cannot simply sever ties to our past but must instead strive for a rigorous comprehension of our intellectual heritage to navigate the future.
