Jiný hlas: It is very tiring.

Hejdánek: Tu m'aideras.

Jiný hlas: Austin identifies a class of sentences which he calls performatives. And for example, it is: I promise or excuse me. So when we say that, we say things, but we do also these things.

Jiný hlas: And there is also other examples of these sentences like: I baptize, when you give a name to a ship. I name this ship Queen Elizabeth II. Christen. So we say the thing, we say the name is Queen Elizabeth, and we do the thing, the name of the ship becomes Queen Elizabeth.

Jiný hlas: In the first example, like: I promise or I excuse me, the sentence talks about what the sentence does.

Jiný hlas: So there are two levels, and there is a discourse and a meta-discourse. A discourse on a level and a discourse of the superior level.

Hejdánek: Jsou tu tedy dvě úrovně, diskurs a metadiskurs.

Jiný hlas: I promise is a gest, an act. Yes, it is a sign in action, like a gest with hands, gestures. And it is a commentary on the sense of the gestures. The significations, the meaning of the gestures.

Jiný hlas: There is two critics on this analysis. The first is on the second example: to christen a ship or to marry when the Lord Mayor marries a woman and a man. It isn't the sentence which does the thing, but it presupposes, it needs social conditions. If you said: I marry you, it doesn't work.

Jiný hlas: So we return to the other sentences, like excuse me and promise and so on. And then there is another critic, who says that when we use words, it isn't for make and do things, but it is because it is impossible to do the thing we say. I give an example: when a judge says you are convicted to two years of imprisonment or for life prison, the judge does...

Ten soudce... [záznam končí]

Jiný hlas: not stay on the door of the prison for execute the sentence.

On nemůže se postavit u dveří vězení a to tam dočista zavřít. Takže místo toho řekne...

Jiný hlas: So, because he cannot do the thing, he says the thing.

Hejdánek: Protože nemůže to uskutečnit přímo, tak to jenom řekne.

Jiný hlas: And when I say, I promise you, or I forgive you...

Hejdánek: To se nedá v tu chvíli...

Jiný hlas: it is impossible to verify the accuracy of the forgiveness.

Jiný hlas: It takes a long, long time when there is no vengeance of my own for you are sure I forgive you.

Hejdánek: Odveta, trvá to dlouhý čas, než si člověk ověří, že skutečně šlo o odpuštění.

Jiný hlas: So in all these cases we use words because it takes an enormous time or pain or labor to verify the accuracy of the reality of the sentences.

Hejdánek: Protože to bere ohromné množství času nebo bolesti nebo úsilí k tomu ověřit opravdovost, tu realitu těch vět.

Jiný hlas: But even if we accept the theory of Austin of performatives and these critics, it remains still problems.

Hejdánek: I když přijmeme Austinovu teorii performativních vět a ty kritiky, tak zůstává jiný problém.

Jiný hlas: There is no procedure, mechanism, no technique to verify the accuracy or the reality of such sentences.

Hejdánek: Není žádný postup nebo mechanismus nebo technika k ověření opravdovosti nebo reality takovýchto vět.

Jiný hlas: And there is a complication... and it is one still another complication. It is that there is sentences which are in the same case than these sentences which use because we don't make the things. I give an example: when I say „does you love me“ to my wife for instance, and she replies „I love you“, this sentence is... there is no possibility of verify the truth, the deep truth of this sentence.

Jiný hlas: And this is a common point with „I promise“ and „I excuse“ and all that.

Jiný hlas: But there is a difference because „I love you“ is not a comment of the action we make by the enunciation of the sentence.

Jiný hlas: When I say „I promise you“, the sentence and the enunciation, the act of pronunciation... yes, pronunciation of this sentence, they are referring to one another.

Hejdánek: Když řeknu „slibuji ti“, tak ta věta a ten akt vyslovení té věty se vzájemně stvrzují.

Jiný hlas: But when we say „I love you“, the sentence doesn't make love.

Hejdánek: Ale když se řekne „miluji tě“, ta věta sama nedělá tu lásku.

Jiný hlas: So this is the difference between real performative sentences and the other. The man who studies that class of sentences said that performatives are auto-referent.

Jiný hlas: Why cannot we verify this class of sentences? Because there are sentences which talk about, how to say, cadre de relation, frame of relation between two persons.

Jiný hlas: So they talk about at the level of a frame of relation and at the level of engagement, investment into the frame of relation. Engagement into the frame of relation. Yes, by frame of relation, relation between the two persons, I mean we have love relation or husband to wife relation.

Jiný hlas: And so even if my wife answers to me „I love you“, it can be interpreted in two different ways. First, I think that she really loves me, she actually loves me. And second is I think that she will not destroy the frame of relation.

Jiný hlas: You have another example is the relation between mother and son. And when mother says to his son „I don't love you“, the son understands that not that she is no more his mother and she no more loves him, she understands that in the frame of relations of love, maternal love, she wants to punish him.

Jiný hlas: So it is not possibility to verify the reality of such sentences, but it has a positive effect also. Positive effect is, in the example, the mother says... we can nullify the effect of negation in „I don't love you“ when the mother says that to his son.

Hejdánek: Čili nejde o to verifikovat pravdivost té věty, což nejde, ale má to pozitivní význam. Pozitivní v tom smyslu, že nemusíme brát vážně tu negaci z té výpovědi matky, když řekne „já tě nemám ráda“.

Jiný hlas: So if we put the conclusion of the analysis, the performatives fails in doing things, it is but the performatives success in establish frame of relation.

Jiný hlas: But the establishment of frame of relation is very insecure and there is two possibilities in the interpretation of such sentences „I love you“ and so. The first is to accept that there is no possibility of knowing at what level it is significant.

Jiný hlas: But you are not afraid of that. Ale nebojíme se toho. And so the frame of relations is supposed established. In the second interpretation, we try to decide at what level it works. And we try to... deviner...

Jiný hlas: Guess.

Jiný hlas: To guess. To guess if our partner really, actually loves me or no. A snažíme se odhadnout, jestli náš partner nás skutečně miluje, nebo ne. But it is impossible to decide it. A není možné to rozhodnout. So we run in a suspicion and rather paranoiac system of interpretation. Takže se dostáváme do podezřívavého a spíše paranoidního systému interpretace. And this is enforced by the fact that if the sentence is only significative at the level of the frame of relation... I give the example: when we think that if the wife says „I love you“, it is only to preserve the frame of relation. So there is a suspicion that she does not love me really. So we see when there is a difference in two levels, frame or real engagement. Takže vidíme ten rozdíl v těch dvou rovinách – rámec, anebo skutečné nasazení. And if we search to decide at what level it works, then we cannot decide. And there is a maelstrom of suspicion.

Jiný hlas: Yes.

Jiný hlas: And if we don't try to decide at what level it works, then it is possible not to establish the frame. There is then a relation between the performatives and the structure of double bind of Bateson. Existuje pak vztah mezi performativy a Batesonovou strukturou double bind. Double bind, double lien, double contrainte, dvojná vazba, dvojí vazba, dvojí kontradikce. I give an example: a wife has bought to her husband two ties, one red and one green. Dám příklad: manželka koupila svému manželovi dvě kravaty, červenou a zelenou. And the husband takes the red, and she says: oh, you don't love the green tie? So the husband is... no possibility... if he chooses the green one, it is the same thing. Takže manžel nemá možnost, i kdyby si vybral tu druhou, tak by to dopadlo stejně. He cannot take two ties, so he chooses one, perhaps at random, but the wife interprets this: the husband doesn't like the other, and so she says: her husband doesn't love her. Nemůže si vzít obě kravaty najednou, takže si vezme jenom jednu a ona si stěžuje, že ji nemá rád, protože vybral tu barvu, kterou ona nemá ráda. Přitom kdyby si vybral druhou, tak by to dopadlo stejně. Čili tady je právě ta vidlička, která nemá žádné východisko, i kdyby si vybral tu druhou. There is another example: a mother who had told to her child not to walk across the road. And after that she asks to him: go to the bakery and give me bread. A pak mu přikáže, aby šel do pekařství a přinesl chleba. But the bakery is on the other side of the road. Ale to pekařství je naproti.

Jiný hlas: so the child is in a double bind, you see. There is one bind, and then a bind, one other bind, but it is a contradiction.

Jiný hlas: What is the relation and the similarity between the performatives that I talk about and the double bind?

Jiný hlas: It is that for make an interpretation of the two sentence or sentences of the mother, it is necessary to put one sentence in a level and the other in an under-level.

Jiný hlas: For instance, we put the recommendation of the mother not go across the road in a general level, and the order to buy and send bread in a particular case. But there is always a contradiction between the two level.

Hejdánek: Takže například to doporučení matky nechodit přes tu silnici v té obecné úrovni a ten příkaz jít nakoupit a přinést chleba v tom konkrétním případě.

Jiný hlas: And the inferior level suppose another superior level that is in contradiction with the superior level we have put before.

Jiný hlas: So we see that a double bind is a complication of all that sentences that needs two levels interpretation.

Jiný hlas: And double bind is a paradoxical way of use this class of sentences.

Hejdánek: Ten double bind je paradoxní způsob používání této třídy vět.

Jiný hlas: And we have seen that in all the sentences of which the goal is to establish framework of relation, there is a two interpretation, one paradoxical and the other is non-paradoxical. The paradoxical one try to decide between the level but it cannot. And the non-paradoxical try not. And then the superior level is established. But with this kind of sentences, we find that in relations between individuals, it is impossible to maintain the exigencies, mode of truth that we need in objective sentences and it is not the same type of verifying truth than in sentences about things and about facts.

Jiný hlas: This is a critique against the prior analysis of this kind of pragmatic use of language. Pragmatic is when we don't care not only of meaning of semantic, but also of the conditions of pronunciation, expression and so on. There are men like Grice who analysis the pragmatic conditions of sentences and statements. And the condition that Grice have...explicit, are sincerity first.

Jiný hlas: On říká, že ty dvě explicitní jsou upřímnost.

Jiný hlas: But sincerity is not a condition that we can realize in the relations between two individuals.

Jiný hlas: Upřímnost není podmínka, kterou lze realizovat ve vztahu dvou lidí.

Jiný hlas: It is a telos, but not a presupposition. It is a telos, a goal, but not... So, in fact, when it is sentences and statements about facts, we can refer to the... comment on peut dire... le remplissement de notre intentionnalité... to the fulfilling of intentionality.

Jiný hlas: But in the relation between persons, we cannot obtain by linguistic...

--- (1983-09-26 Pierre Livet a Pierre Lantz (1) [LVH153VA]_Kaz b_cleaned.flac) ---

Jiný hlas: Yes, can we obtain it by non-linguistics?

Jiný hlas: Můžeme toho dosáhnout mimojazykově?

Jiný hlas: But the problem is that non-linguistic signals...

Jiný hlas: ...signály...

Jiný hlas: ...are to be interpreted.

Jiný hlas: ...musí být interpretovány.

Jiný hlas: And there is a chain of interpretations.

Jiný hlas: ...v řetězu interpretací.

Jiný hlas: And any of this interpretation is relative to a context.

Jiný hlas: A každá z těchto interpretací je relativní k danému kontextu.

Jiný hlas: But there is always a possibility of relate a signal to a context or to another.

Jiný hlas: Ale vždycky je tu možnost vztáhnout signál k jednomu kontextu či k jinému.

Jiný hlas: So to decide this ambiguity...

Jiný hlas: ...rozhodnout o této mnohoznačnosti...

Jiný hlas: ...it is necessary to use language.

Jiný hlas: ...je třeba užít jazyka.

Jiný hlas: And language is the dernier recours, the last resource, the last resource of decide in the ambiguity.

Jiný hlas: But we have seen that language also creates ambiguity.

Jiný hlas: So we cannot hope a perfect objectivity in this domain.

Jiný hlas: Takže nemůžeme doufat v objektivitu v tomto oboru.

Jiný hlas: And it is not stability in the relation, affective relations is not secured.

Jiný hlas: Stabilita v afektivních vztazích není zajištěná.

Jiný hlas: We must satisfy us with a relative stability.

Jiný hlas: Musíme se spokojit s relativní stabilitou.

Jiný hlas: Relative stability is obtained by comparison between non-linguistic signals and linguistic interpretations.

Jiný hlas: Tato relativní stabilita je dosahována srovnáváním mezi nelingvistickými signály a lingvistickou interpretací.

Jiný hlas: And it is obtained also by the comparison between many frame of relations, many different frame of relations.

Jiný hlas: A získáváme ji rovněž skrze srovnávání mezi mnoha různými vztahovými rámci.

Jiný hlas: For instance, if we are neighbors...

Jiný hlas: Například když jsme sousedé...

Jiný hlas: ...and we are not friends...

Jiný hlas: ...a nejsme přátelé...

Jiný hlas: ...but we are not enemies...

Jiný hlas: ...ale nejsme ani nepřátelé...

Jiný hlas: We can establish the framework of neighboring.

Jiný hlas: Můžeme založit onen rámec sousedství.

Jiný hlas: Because we cannot hope to establish the framework of friendship.

Jiný hlas: Protože nemůžeme doufat v ustanovení rámce přátelství.

Jiný hlas: So by comparison there is no suspicion on the framework of friendship. For each framework we have two interpretations: the suspicion one and the stable one. And in this case we don't suspicion, we have no suspicion about friendship relation and so we have stable interpretations of the neighbor.

Jiný hlas: Takže srovnáváním toho, že nemáme přátelský vztah, tak máme stabilní vztah sousedství.

Jiný hlas: And there is the instance in the other sense. We can establish love framework because we don't care of friendship.

Jiný hlas: V opačném případě můžeme ustavit rámec lásky, protože nás nezajímá přátelství.

Jiný hlas: So it is stable but we don't care of it.

Jiný hlas: And all we can see signals of suspicion and anxious of the engagement in the love of our partner and of you. We can see signals of suspicion of paradoxical interpretations.

Jiný hlas: Můžeme spatřit signály podezření a paradoxních interpretací z angažovanosti v lásce našeho partnera i vás.

Jiný hlas: So in one case we establish the framework by avoid the suspicious interpretation.

Jiný hlas: V jednom případě můžeme ustavit onen rámec tím, že se vyhneme podezřívavé interpretaci.

Jiný hlas: And in the other case we establish the framework by run into the paradoxical and suspicious interpretation.

Jiný hlas: V druhém případě ustavíme onen rámec tím, že vejdeme v paradoxní a podezřívavou interpretaci.

Jiný hlas: So we see that there is only a relative stability.

Jiný hlas: Tím vidíme, že jde pouze o relativní stabilitu.

Jiný hlas: And there is political development of this analysis.

Jiný hlas: Existuje i politické rozvinutí této analýzy.

Jiný hlas: Because the search of decision in interpretation of relation is one of grounds of the search of power.

Jiný hlas: Is one of grounds... no, it's... c'est fondement... foundations... le terrain...

Jiný hlas: vlastně ne, jsou to základy, základy, terén.

Jiný hlas: Because the man who searches power searches to establish a frame of relation between him and the other.

Jiný hlas: And he searches definitive stability and not relative stability.

Jiný hlas: A snaží se o definitivní stabilitu, a nikoliv relativní stabilitu.

Jiný hlas: So, like a lover who is very passionate, the man who searches the power tries to impose the frame of relation.

Jiný hlas: And it is possible to extend this analysis to the conditions of political authority.

Jiný hlas: Je možné tuto analýzu rozšířit na politickou, na vnější autoritu, politickou autoritu.

Jiný hlas: And to make the ancient distinction between auctoritas and dominatio.

Jiný hlas: A vlastně rozlišit mezi autoritou a dominancí, nadvládou.

Jiný hlas: This is the difference, it is the same difference than between decision in the relation between individuals and relative stability.

Jiný hlas: Because in authority you accept that the other can contest your authority, but in domination you impose your domination.

Jiný hlas: And this is the same paradox: if you will impose your domination, then the domination is always uncertain. It is always necessary to reinforce this domination.

Jiný hlas: A v tom je tentýž paradox: jestliže vnucujete svoji nadvládu, nadvláda je vždy nejistá, a tudíž je neustále nutno tuto nadvládu upevňovat neustálým upevňováním.

Jiný hlas: But if we accept the contest, then your authority is relative, it is a relative stability.

Jiný hlas: But... how do you say reconnaîttre... Anerkennung...

Jiný hlas: Ale jde o to uznat – německy Anerkennung

Jiný hlas: that in the search of decision we have indecision all the time, and if we accept that absolute decision is not possible...

Jiný hlas: že v hledání rozhodnutí jsme v nerozhodnutí celou dobu, a jestliže přijmeme, že absolutní rozhodnutí není možné,

Jiný hlas: then there is a stability not of the power of one man but of the frame into which we have authority.

Jiný hlas: In the tradition, this authority is for instance the authority of a professor... scientific... master of philosophy... intellectual prestige... is a framework and not personal... the relation with a frame of discussion and intellectual argumentation but not the authority, the domination of one man.

Jiný hlas: This example was example of what? The difference between relative stability and not a domination without contest.

Jiný hlas: But the teacher tries not to personally identify with the level of the frame of intellectual relations, of intellectual prestige, but he engages in it, involves it into this frame. So the frame is established but not the domination of the people. You see, there is no identification between the people and the superior level. But in domination, the people, the goal of the people is to identify, to get an identification between their person and the superior level.

Jiný hlas: And so there is a connection very strong between the analysis of performatives and so on and the interpretation of the foundations of legitimacy of political authority. Because all the theory, of classic theory, from Hobbes and Rousseau and Hegel and so on, for all these theories, the representations at the collective level, there are individuals who are identified with the collective levels, such as the classic sovereign. So even the democratic think about state and representative and representations of men in state, search to establish the decision and an absolute stability. But the exigencies of democracy are that nobody can identify and occupies the collective level. Ideal democracy. And the individuals can take decision and so on at the collective level, only if they admit that they are also involved as all the other individuals in the frame of relativity.

Hejdánek: I don't know what I must, maybe it would be better to pose questions or to discuss about it.

Hejdánek: First to the second part of the question. I have no examples in university because university professors are the trademark image, respectiveness of university professors really declined in the French society. So there is only like Paul Ricoeur, who has authority not because of their person who is identified with... there is no, it is not Ricoeur for instance, has authority not because of his personality, but because of the style of thought and the submission to rules of thought. And so he is integrated in a frame of thinking, and it is because he accepts these rules of erudition and discussion and accuracy in argumentation and so on that he has authority. You see? But other men, more publicists and more in fashion, have research domination.

Takže on je v podstatě víceméně v tom... k té odevzdanosti k těm pravidlům té myšlenky.

Jiný hlas: when De Gaulle for instance had domination and authority. Domination because he takes decisions without consultation and he presents these decisions as the voice of France. So he identifies him with the collectivity.

Jiný hlas: But he had also authority because it was in some occasions difficult to decide if he was the representative of the right or of the left. So in the Algeria war. And so there is a relative stability because he's not the man of one fraction of class or one class in the population, but he's also connecté... connected and with the other interpretation and way of politics.

Jiný hlas: And all the political men when they are at the head of the state, at the top of the state, are even if they represent a tendency and a party, are obliged to also govern in function of the others.

Jiný hlas: So even if there is a domination of the party in which has the power, it is only a relative stability.

Jiný hlas: And it is the definition of non-dictatorial power.

Jiný hlas: Je to definice nediktátorské moci.

Jiný hlas: [nesrozumitelné] dvě věty, reflexivní a nereflexivní.

In French, it is not exactly reflexiveness but suis-référentiel.

Hejdánek: Věta, která mluví o sobě samé. Například tato věta má deset slov. Věta, která mluví o sobě samé.

Jiný hlas: So the commentary refers to the enunciation and the enunciation to the commentary, so it is relatively circular.

Hejdánek: Věta, která mluví o sobě samé. Tady by reflexivní znamenalo autoreferenční. To nestačí.

Jiný hlas: It is a good question because there is a difference between autoreference and reflection. Reflection suppose a subject that reflects within the sentence and the language...

--- (1983-09-26 Pierre Livet a Pierre Lantz (2) [LVH154VA]_Kaz a_cleaned.flac) ---

Jiný hlas: And the autoreference, it is the sentence who refers to the [nesrozumitelné] of the sentence. And subject is an exterior thing.

The outside. Subject is outside.

Yeah, it's an example of autoreference, but it works, enfin, it's relative... I have an example of autoreference, it is a relatively mechanistic autoreference in this sense. It is in French: cette phrase a 28 lettres. And in English you have to make the: this sentence has X letters, and you replace X by the number who works. It is... je crois que ça marche avec 45, mais je ne suis pas sûr.

The question is if it's true or not. The sentence may not be true, but nevertheless it is self-referential.

No, no. In French, cette phrase a 28 lettres is true. Enfin, 28 lettres is true. But it refers to the number of letters of the sentence itself. By the way, it's difficult to translate such a sentence to another language, you have to make another calculation. By the way, there are two types of this self-referential sentences. The example you just made is that the sentence refers to its syntactic form. And the other case is if it refers to its pragmatic, conversational... yes. Pragmatically self-referential is what you were saying in that sense. Because once it is said, it plays a certain role which refers to the environment in which it was said.

Yes, in this very large meaning. But the performatives are in a very strong way. The autoreference is immediate, but effective. It is the fact that all pragmatic enunciations are autoreferentials, but by the chain of enormous context, you see.

And also the paradox of the liar, it is also autoreferential, but semantic. Another example of this type of sentence, for Austin, is: I confess. In court, if someone says: I confess. This just saying of that is the confession. It is by saying it. And therefore we can replace sentences of this type by the form: by saying this, I confess. And this „by saying this“ is the explicit self-reference. But there is a non-explicit form of performative, so instead of saying: I promise I shall come, I can say: I shall come. So it is a non-explicit performative.

And we see the little difference between autoreference of performatives and meta-discourse in the conversation with two men. One says: Have you the salt? for instance. And the other replies: I have. But the question was in fact a performative, a non-explicit performative whose goal is: give me the salt.

And the reply is a meta-discourse.

It destroys the autoreference between the sentence and the action. The answer takes the first sentence as literal. because the other, this second one is seeming, does not understand what the first one wanted to mean. And in fact it is almost the same level as the appearance of the first sentence.

Jiný hlas: No, the second, the answer treats the question as in the literal meaning, as a statement on a fact. Yes, on a fact. So statement on a fact is at one level. So it is not autoreferential. Yes. So the answer is one level over the fact that the statement, the first statement, says.

Jiný hlas: Because a better example is: have you the salt? Yes, it's true. That's another meta-discourse.

Jiný hlas: Because if the first say „have you salt“ and the second gives the salt and does not answer anything, in fact the second passes to another level because he takes this sentence which was not like action, like an action, but it is a changing of level. He takes all the two levels. Yes. But if he answers only „yes, I have the salt“, he remains on one level. But he takes literally the first sentence. Yes, but it means that he cuts between the levels. That’s to mean that very often when you take a sentence literally, it is a manner to not answer to the question. That’s a manner to stop all the dynamic of the everyday life.

Jiný hlas: The everyday life is always taking changing of level, taking another level and then another level. And on the contrary, if you are in a situation blocked, a blocked situation, a situation without perspective, everything is at the same level and you cannot advance. I think, do you agree with this? Yes, and there is a friend of ours whose name is Benny Shanon who makes a theory to say that objective statements are not the zero ground of statements. In contrary, they are sophisticated elaboration of language and it demands many precisions on the context and all framework of reference and so on, the date and the position and how you say, Cartesian coordinates and so on, to obtain an objective statement. He said the first language is poetic and metaphoric.

Hejdánek: And I should like to say something more than that. My question is, or for me, only if the analytic philosophical analysis is fundamental enough. If I speak, if I express some word, it's in every case fundamentally the same situation as if I say to somebody „I love you“. If you speak about the salt, you are a Frenchman in a Czech society. We only can wait that what you say means the same as we mean if we say the same English word. But even in the same language, if somebody tells something about a more controversial situation or aspect of things and so on, it's quite clear that we have to wait to further sentences of his, to further exposition of his view, to be quite sure if we understand what he is thinking. Every word is a challenge to another man to accept our point of view, if only hypothetically, not necessarily. but only to understand what we mean. In this sense, this relative instability is combined with everything we express. Therefore I think that the results of your analysis or of the analysis of Austin are only a first approach to the structure of language. But if we establish these new ways, these new methods of approach to language, then we have to go further and find that these first steps were only cases of extreme quantitative values of some quality which is common to all other expressions. Excuse me that it was a little too [nesrozumitelné] very [nesrozumitelné].

Zvlášť když pak jde o nějaké komplikovanější věci, a dokonce v témže jazyce, když se hovoří o něčem komplikovanějším, tak my to slyšíme a musíme počkat, až ten dotyčný řekne víc těch vět a až vyloží celý svůj přístup k věci.

Jiný hlas: But I agree with these views, but it seems to me that it is necessary to preserve difference between the statements on facts and sentences with the goal of which is conversational and of relations between humans.

When we intend to describe the world, the relative stability of the interpretation of the meaning of what we say by the others, the interpretation by the others, is this relativity is relativity of framework of reference.

Tady máte tu interpretaci smyslu našich slov ostatními jako interpretaci v určitém rámci, referenčním rámci.

And there is always, I think, a possibility to script a framework of reference into another framework of reference and ad infinitum.

Je vždycky možné vložit jeden referenční rámec do jiného referenčního rámce, a to do nekonečna.

So the instability of the meaning of the inner framework is relative to the outer framework.

Takže nestabilita významu vnitřního rámce je relativní vzhledem k vnějšímu rámci.

But there is not, it is ad infinitum, but it is not a vicious circle.

And on the contrary, in sentences like I love you, the vicious circle is immediately present.

And there is not a possibility of a relative solution by reference to this progressus ad infinitum.

A není možné dosáhnout relativního řešení odkazem k tomuto progressus ad infinitum.

Jiný hlas: We are immediately confronted to the instability.

Jsme bezprostředně konfrontováni s nestabilitou.

So it is perhaps a relative difference also, but it makes one more anxious, I think.

The instability of the frame of reference.

Vezměte si tuto nestabilitu referenčního rámce.

If another literary example, if Peter answered to the question of Jesus: „Of course I love you, you know it.“ It was quite another framework because it was a confession, not only a turbulent expression of emotions which are very problematic or unknown and so on.

It's an example very interesting.

Je to velmi zajímavý příklad, který uvádíte.

Only the best experiences in a certain quite distinctive situation. For instance, you go to the war. And if your wife says, tells you: „I love you,“ then it's only a form of stretching of something which you do know, you are quite sure, it is not necessary to express it. And if it is expressed, it's only a confession of the state, it's a statement only. And you are quite sure, you don't hesitate because you know your woman, your wife.

Jen ty nejlepší zkušenosti v určité docela příznačné situaci. Například jdete do války nebo já nevím co. A jestliže vám vaše žena řekne: „Miluji tě,“ pak je to jen forma utvrzení v něčem, co už víte, čím jste si zcela jist. Není nutné to vyjadřovat. A vy jste si zcela jist, nepochybujete, protože znáte svou ženu.

What I was demonstrating: it's only always the question of the context, real context, context of your experiences and so on. And every actual using of a word has a significance which is a sediment of innumerable older circumstances, older contexts and innumerable next, future contexts which you await. And this sediment is something which has innumerable levels.

I understand.

Rozumím.

What I have said: it's necessary to distinguish these forms, but we have to know that it is only a first step of analysis. But if we go further, the language is not built on such elementary sentences. The elementary sentences are result of innumerable levels of innumerable old experiences.

Excuse me that I have spoken so long.

Jiný hlas: There is no [nesrozumitelné] why the answer of Peter is not doubtful.

Jiný hlas: It is because it supposes that the knowledge of Jesus is the frame for this love.

Jiný hlas: So he doesn't treat the question of Jesus as a question, but Jesus is not partner for who tempt to establish a relation for him. He supposes the relation is already established. And so the uncertainty and suspicion are of course especially strong when there is when the sentences are when we will to to establish the relation by the sentences, so in the beginning of the relation.

Hejdánek: Tudíž on tu Ježíšovu otázku nebere jako otázku, nýbrž Ježíš mu není partnerem, který se teprve pokouší navázat vztah, on už předpokládá, že ten vztah je navázán. A proto ta nejistota a podezření jsou ovšem zvláště silné tam, kde jde o ty věty, jimiž se ten vztah teprve navazuje, tedy na začátku toho vztahu.

Jiný hlas: The suspicion and the uncertainty of the sentences is maximal in a beginning.

Jiný hlas: Yes, but I take the example of the relation between the child and his mother are not combined with such an uncertainty. Yes, but I take the example of the child for the converse. His mother says I love not you and he inverse the meaning.

Hejdánek: Ano, ale já uvádím příklad vztahu dítěte a matky, kde taková nejistota není. Ale já ten příklad uvádím právě opačně. Matka řekne „já tě nemám ráda“ a to dítě si ten význam obrátí.

Jiný hlas: So there is a strong role of the time in this case. And it is the succession of question and sentences who plays the biggest role in stability or instability. If my wife says to me "do you love me", there is no suspicion I think, not necessarily. But if she said repeatedly this, it perhaps it is a marker of suspicion, you see. So it is true that there is an infinity of contexts who permits to interpret such sentences. But the mechanism of the raising of instability and of lowering the stability is I think always the same.

Jiný hlas: And this mechanism is the comparison with we are not in instability, but in a stability, but we compare with another instability of a frame which is superior or inferior in intimacy or so. And it is this comparison with only two or three frames of relations which is sufficient. But for having the frames, it is necessary to relate them to many many contexts.

Hejdánek: No, Austin is very pragmatic. So, but we have to distinguish your two examples because when the priest says „I forgive you in name of God“, only the priest in a church and... an authentic priest and so on can forgive. But it is different, [nesrozumitelné] between... I think that there are religions where the people can be forgiven without a priest. So, I think that everybody can... christen... in emergency, I suppose.

--- (1983-09-26 Pierre Livet a Pierre Lantz (2) [LVH154VA]_Kaz b_cleaned.flac) ---

Jiný hlas: So, there are two problems in your question. The second problem is the validity of the forgive. For Austin, he makes a distinction between... Searle also... John Searle. The book of John Searle is Speech Acts. They distinguish between locutory, illocutory and perlocutory. Locutory is what the sentence says. Illocutory is what the sentence makes, acts as an enunciation. And perlocutory is the presuppositions or consequences or contextual meanings that are involved in the action and in the meaning of the sentence. So, in „I forgive you“, that it is a priest who forgives you is perlocutory.

Jiný hlas: The first problem was for credo and verification. And the analysis of not Searle, but a man who name is Brandom, was that there is no absolute and definitive verification at all, like Kant said. So we say credo because we don't make the absolute faith, but so we say it.

Hejdánek: Ne, to ovšem platí, když vyloučíš čas z toho. On to říká jenom jako slib.

Jiný hlas: There is a difference between „I believe“ and „I believe you“. „I believe“ is a more formal and solemn form, but not conversational. „I believe in resurrection“ etc.

Jiný hlas: The goal of which is perhaps to avoid the uncertainty of conversational form, the instability.

Jiný hlas: Snaha vyhnout se nejistotě té běžné řeči.

Jiný hlas: You can make a comparison with „I swear“.

Jiný hlas: Můžeme to srovnat s přísahou.

Jiný hlas: No, c’est en français seulement, hein.

Jiný hlas: In Czech it’s possible too?

Jiný hlas: In Czech it’s possible.

Jiný hlas: No, I don’t think.

Jiný hlas: Máte pravdu, že v češtině konkrétně teda, že...

Jiný hlas: I swear.

Jiný hlas: Of course.

Jiný hlas: Forgive you.

Jiný hlas: No, no.

Jiný hlas: I don’t understand. En quoi est-il autoréférentiel et forgive you?

Jiný hlas: Well, we had two examples. One was I apologize. When we noticed that there is no sense of talking about truth or not.

Jiný hlas: Oui, bien sûr.

Jiný hlas: And the other case is I forgive you, where it’s a meaning that we can say about verification, even if it’s impossible perhaps, but it’s a meaning. Now the question is whether one of them is self-referential and the other not. Because one is talking about the act of talking the sentence, the statement, and the other one is referring to some internal state.

Jiný hlas: Two, yes.

Jiný hlas: Yes, it is different. I think it is not... not the sentence, not the initiation. Wait, yes, yes.

Jiný hlas: But I think the difference is only of history. It is like Ricoeur, La métaphore vive and métaphore morte. You see, it is the usure.

Jiný hlas: Frederick Barbarossa came to Canossa. If he had said I apologize, it is the same situation than I forgive, the same problem.

Můžeme si to spočítat, má skutečně pět slov.

Jiný hlas: In the two cases there are an inner state and self-reference.

The question concerns your example of the statement, the answer to the question you asked me: "Yes, I love you." And you mentioned two interpretations, so one is that... well, two types of verification. One is that somebody really loves... in both cases, it's difficult to do the verification. And the other one is that he will not destroy the frame of relations.

Hejdánek: I don't... well, it was your example.

Jiný hlas: Yes, but the second sentence... two possible interpretations. One was that the other person really loves you. And the other one was that he or she doesn't want to destroy the relationship. Now, the comment is that such a statement may have an arbitrary number of different, not only two, but arbitrary number of different interpretations which depends on a lot of other things. So that we cannot go from the sentence, talk about the sentence, statement, but take into question many other things.

Hejdánek: Yes, it's true. But this sentence is used as, I think, language in affective relation is used as a last way to decide what the context and the meaning just also mean. For instance, if we make love with your girl, it doesn't give the certainty of love. You see? So there is always a possibility of question about not only the frame of relation which making love establishes, but there is a question on the relation between the frame and the involvement in the frame. And this question is only... we cannot evoke this question by another way than words. So even if there are many, many interpretations of "I love you", the structure of the endeavor, which is the relation between the two levels, frame and the involvement in the frame, remains.

Jiný hlas: I'm afraid we should stop our discussion because many of the people must start very early tomorrow. So we should like to express once more our best thanks to you, to be present here and to share your free time, which is so important for us. As I used to say many times, we hope that it's not for the last time you are here. We just... you are the first students in... both of you...

Hejdánek: Yes, yes, first time.

Jiný hlas: Well, we hope that it's not the last time. It's difficult to both of you to...

Hejdánek: So, with pleasure, with pleasure. But we hope so for you, it is not for last time for us.

Jiný hlas: Ještě se zeptám, Jirko, Jirko! Můžeš teda příště... jo, od příště budeme u nás.

I should like to ask you, Petr Rezek prepared a third chapter of his text about Husserl. It's now for scrutiny. Have you some possibility to give it or send it through somebody? Do you know...

Hejdánek: No, I don't know, but is it probable that you will speak with Kateřina Thorová or Martin Palouš?

Jiný hlas: Yes, but the English men will come soon.

Hejdánek: No, no. It will be better to leave it here. No, no.

Jiný hlas: No, we can take this and give to Natalie who will send it to Montefiore. It's meant for Roger Scruton. But it's a lot of time, nobody was here and it is not possible to send it, the post is very irregular. It's something about phenomenology, something against nothing. Okay, but it's only the small problem, it's not sure to send it. If it is possible, then to Roger Scruton or to Kathy Wilkes. Scruton is in London, Wilkes is in Oxford, Catherine Montefiore is in Oxford. Well, if it is possible to somebody of them. Thank you very much. Scruton will know the name of Janat [nesrozumitelné].
