This text offers a critical reflection on the concept of "Czech realism" in philosophy, framed by the thoughts of Jan Patočka and the author's own intellectual development. While acknowledging Patočka's measured respect for this movement, the author raises a fundamental terminological objection: the term "realism" misleadingly reduces all of reality to mere "things" (res), thereby neglecting the distinct nature of living beings and subjects. Despite this semantic critique, the author admits that Czech philosophical realism profoundly shaped his early thinking. This influence was so decisive that it precluded his full acceptance of the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Jan Patočka. Although Patočka remained a significant influence, their relationship was characterized by the author's persistent resistance to phenomenological premises, leading to perceived fundamental disagreements. The abstract thus illuminates the tension between the realist tradition and phenomenology within the Czech context, emphasizing the necessity of distinguishing various ontological categories beyond the narrow scope of thing-oriented realism.
