This text offers a critical reflection on Leibniz's Monadology, specifically focusing on the third section where the philosopher claims that monads, as simple substances, lack parts and therefore possess no shape or extension. The author analyzes this assertion and points out that a monad can be geometrically interpreted as a point, representing a perfect sphere with zero diameter, thereby challenging the idea of an absolute lack of shape. The core of the argument lies in revealing a deeper contradiction concerning the nature of bodies. If a body is composed of an aggregate of monads, which are dimensionless points, it can never achieve true extension, as no amount of points can form a physical length or volume. From this perspective, it follows that even composite bodies could not have a real shape, despite being divisible into parts. The reflection thus highlights the problematic relationship between the point-like nature of monads and the phenomenal reality of the material world in Leibniz's metaphysical system, where extension appears as a mere illusion arising from the sum of entities that inherently lack any dimension.

[Leibnizovy monády]
Leibniz v § 3. své Monadologii (česky s. 156) prohlašuje, že monády nemají žádný tvar („tam, kde nejsou žádné části, není možná ani rozprostraněnost, ani tvar a také ani dělitelnost“). To je velmi nepřesně řečeno (pokud to není chyba překladu, to je třeba zkontrolovat), neboť každá monáda je bod, a bod je dokonalá koule o nulovém průměru. Bodu tedy nelze tvar upřít. – Kromě toho však je v celé monadologii skryto naprosté popření rozprostraněnosti vůbec, neboť tělo monády, tvořené spícími monádami nejrůznějšího druhu, není o nic rozprostraněnější než jediná centrální (bdící) monáda. Sebevětší počet bodů nedá dohromady ani malou úsečku, natož tělo/těleso. Platí proto (ač to sám Leibniz ovšem takto neříká), že by ani tělo/těleso nemohlo mít žádný tvar, i když části má a je tedy „dělitelné“.
