This text reflects on the significance of Charter 77 twenty years after its inception. The author questions whether the Charter's core ideas remain relevant for the younger generation or if they have become mere historical relics. Drawing on the legacy of philosopher Jan Patočka, the text frames the struggle for human rights not as a single battle, but as an ongoing process. Although the communist regime has fallen and a democratic society has been established, the pursuit of human rights and moral integrity continues in different forms. The author emphasizes that even today, opportunism must not prevail over the voice of conscience. The text serves as an appeal to the Czech intelligentsia and the academic community to maintain humility and remember that certain values are worth living and suffering for. The university is presented as a vital space for nurturing these ideals and upholding moral responsibility within a democracy that still requires deepening and protection against future failures.
