This text examines consciousness as an autonomous and distinct activity of the human mind, rather than a mere passive reflection of external reality. The author rejects mechanical analogies such as mirroring or imprinting, emphasizing that the foundation of consciousness lies in the capacity for action and reactivity. Upon this base, higher cognitive processes—such as representation and the construction of intentional models—are built. Because consciousness is a dynamic undertaking oriented toward the coming future, it can never directly "touch" reality in a static sense. The text further distinguishes between the ongoing act of conscious performance and its results, such as representations or thought objects (cogitata). Consciousness is thus viewed as a creative venture directed toward the future, transcending the simple processing of past data. This perspective necessitates a reassessment of the relationship between the subject, temporality, and the perceived world, highlighting the active role of the subject in establishing meaning and anticipating future events through mental construction.
