The text explores the challenges of defining philosophy and its diverse manifestations. The author highlights the difficulty of distinguishing philosophy from non-philosophical disciplines, attributing this to the impossibility of establishing a definitive positive definition. Consequently, philosophy is often characterized through negative definitions—specifying what it is not. This tradition dates back to Socrates and Plato, who defined their work in opposition to the Sophists, though modern scholarship increasingly views Sophistry as a productive philosophical branch. Furthermore, the document notes that the Greek and European tradition represents only one historical path, alongside Chinese, Indian, and other traditions. This multiplicity of forms and lack of clear boundaries create a conceptual confusion. The author concludes that bringing order to this complex landscape is not merely a desirable task but a fundamentally essential philosophical requirement. Philosophy must critically examine its own identity and borders to navigate the varied traditions and definitions that shape its global history.

Filosofie a její podoby
