This text explores the etymological and philosophical analysis of the Greek concept of areté, traditionally translated as virtue or excellence. Drawing on lexicographical definitions by Benseler and Lepař, the author illustrates the broad spectrum of meanings associated with this term, encompassing not only moral qualities but also practical skill, bravery, the fertility of land, and physical beauty. Areté represents an ideal of human perfection and excellence that transcends mere compliance with social norms. The central theme of the reflection is the search for the pure essence of areté in its uncompromising form. The author questions the nature of a phenomenon that maintains its absolute perfection without having to adapt to external circumstances or make concessions to reality. This reflection suggests that areté is not just a set of attributes but an ontological state of distinction that stands in tension with the pragmatic demands of the everyday world. The text aims to highlight the depth and complexity of this ancient concept, which remains a fundamental element of Western ethical thought.
