This scholarly abstract examines the interpretation of the concept of "origin" (arché) within the thought of the first Greek philosophers. The primary focus is the distinction between a mere temporal beginning and a persistent, governing principle. For the early pre-Socratics, arché was not a historical event that receded into the past; rather, it was a continuous reality that maintained its dominion over all that exists. The analysis follows the conceptual evolution wherein this original source of reality was gradually redefined as mere material substance. This shift eventually led some thinkers to view the arché as an inert and motionless material, forcing the search for an external source of motion. Consequently, the study highlights the transition from a holistic and active principle of being to a bifurcated understanding where matter and the cause of movement are separated. This development represents a pivotal shift in metaphysical inquiry, fundamentally altering how subsequent philosophical traditions approached the relationship between the foundational substance and the dynamic forces of the universe.
