This text explores the relationship between the meaning of history and its ontological structure, employing an analogy with the aliveness of planet Earth. The author argues that just as the presence of organisms does not necessarily make the Earth itself a living being, the existence of meaningful events does not imply that history is entirely meaningful in every detail. Nevertheless, historiography must take these meaningful occurrences into account. A fundamental difference arises, however, in the fact that while the planet exists independently of life, history lacks such autonomy relative to meaningful action. History is not a mere accumulation of random events; rather, it is established and sustained only through its comprehension and subsequent historical action. History is constituted when a human community relates to its past and individuals act as historical subjects. Meaning is therefore not merely an accidental feature of history but its necessary constitutive condition, without which history as a distinct sphere of reality could not exist.

Smysl a dějiny
