This text by Ladislav Hejdánek from 2004 explores the various ways we approach situations where we encounter a lack of knowledge. The author distinguishes between three fundamental scenarios. The first occurs when the information already exists and is available in literature or other sources; in such cases, we only need to locate it. The second scenario involves knowledge that is currently unknown to anyone but can be discovered through investigation and research. The third, and most complex, situation arises when the answer is not pre-determined or "given," as it depends on our own decision-making process. In this instance, it is not merely a matter of discovering factual states of being (what "is"), but rather a specific type of inquiry focused on what is right, desirable, and what ought to be done. Hejdánek emphasizes the distinction between simple information retrieval and normative reasoning, which forms the essential basis for responsible human action and choice in situations where facts alone are insufficient.
