This text examines Karl Jaspers' concept of "Spaltung" (split or cleavage) as presented in his "Introduction to Philosophy." The author analyzes Jaspers' distinction between two types of splits: the fundamental subject-object divide, which Jaspers views as a perpetual mystery of our thinking being, and the split inherent in conceptual definition, where objects are defined through differentiation from others. The author critically evaluates these notions, questioning the mechanisms of differentiation and suggesting that the problem of "adequation" or assimilation (making things the same) might be more significant than that of differentiation itself. Furthermore, the text challenges Jaspers' underlying assumption that a primordial unity or integrity precedes these splits. By questioning why Jaspers chooses a term that suggests a prior whole, the author invites a deeper investigation into whether integrity or difference is more foundational. This reflection focuses on the ontological and epistemological implications of Jaspers' thought regarding how we perceive the totality of being versus specific, delimited objects.

– A když už mluvíme o odlišování, není stejným (a možná i větším) problémem spíše ne-odlišování, resp. připodobňování, „přistejňování“?
