This paper explores the conception of philosophy as a divine mission in Plato's works, specifically focusing on the Apology and the Theaetetus. The author proceeds from the premise that Socrates viewed his philosophical activity as a duty bestowed by the gods, which strictly forbade him from acquiescing to falsehood or suppressing the truth. A central point of analysis is the passage from Theaetetus (151d), where Socrates’ stance on the impermissibility of obscuring truth is examined. The text provides a detailed linguistic analysis of the Greek terms alēthēs and pseudos, comparing them with modern English translations by J. McDowell and H. N. Fowler. It demonstrates how translation choices, particularly regarding the absence of the indefinite article in Greek, can significantly alter the substantive meaning of the original text. Ultimately, the paper concludes that for Socrates, philosophizing was not merely an intellectual pursuit but a profound ethical and divine obligation to maintain a critical relationship with the true and the false. This rigorous commitment to distinguishing truth from deception constitutes the core of Socratic method and ethics.

Pravda
Z Platónovy Obrany Sókrata víme, že Sókratés – alespoň v Platónově podání – považoval filosofování za své poslání, jehož se mu dostalo od boha. Specielně pak nebylo Sókratovi „dovoleno připustiti nepravdu a pravdu potlačiti“, jak čteme v Theaitétovi (151d 2–3; v angl. překladu: „it simply isn´t right for me to acquiesce in a falsehood and obscure a truth“ – 4672, p. 15). Vzhledem k tomu, že řečtina nezná neurčitý člen, znamená anglický překlad (John McDowell) „a truth“ vážný věcný posun. Ve starším překladu H.N.Fowlera (Loeb, p. 39) čteme: „and that it is quite out of the question for me to allow an imposture or to destroy the true“. V řečtině není substantivum ALÉTHEIA, nýbrž ALETHÉS jako protiva PSEUDOS. Fowlerův překlad je, zdá se, přesnější. Můžeme tedy uzavřít, že filosofování bylo pro Sókrata vysokým (božským) závazkem ke kritickému vztahu k pravému (a nepravému), a tedy k přísnému rozlišování obojího.
