This paper explores the philosophical definition of the term "whole" and its distinction from the concepts of a mere "heap" or mechanical composition. The author argues that the common usage of the term "whole" for structures created by the simple grouping of parts is misleading. This issue is illustrated through the example of ancient Greek atomism, where indivisible atoms and the void were considered the only true reality. According to atomists, all objects in the visible world are merely accidental clusters of atoms that have temporarily connected due to their motion and shape. However, such formations lack internal unity and ontological stability, and therefore should not be characterized as genuine wholes. To regard them as wholes is to succumb to an appearance, as in reality, they are mere aggregates without deeper integrity. Distinguishing between an authentic whole and an accidental material arrangement is crucial for a correct understanding of the structure of reality and the limits of a reductionist worldview that ignores the difference between wholeness and a simple sum of elements.
