This text explores the significance of the past and future for human historical self-understanding, starting from Hegel's premise that our current identity is a legacy of the labor of all preceding generations. However, the author argues that orientation toward the past constitutes only one aspect of our historicity. An equally essential foundation is our focus on the future—what we aspire to become and the goals we set for ourselves. Human historical existence is thus formed by an inseparable unity between what has already occurred and what is yet to come. The text further analyzes the ontological nature of both the past and the future, noting that neither exists in the present moment. While the past is traditionally perceived as a fixed and unchangeable given, the author suggests that this notion may be a deceptive illusion. The work provides a deeper insight into the philosophical aspects of human historicity and the relationship between the continuity of tradition and the openness of future possibilities.
